The lion looked all round, and then showed its teeth. Hercules shot another arrow. Again the arrow hit the lion, but did not hurt it. The lion’s skin was very tough. Hercules was ready to shoot another arrow when the lion saw him. It lashed its tail and sprang at him. Hercules lifted his club and struck the lion on its head. The club broke in two. The lion fell to the ground, but it was not dead. Hercules seized the lion’s neck with both hands and killed it. Hercules cut the skin off the lion and put it over his shoulders. Then he went back to the king. “I have done the first task,” said he. After that Hercules always wore the lion’s skin, and he made another club.

해석 사자는 주위를 살피더니 이빨을 드러냈습니다. 헤르쿨레스는 화살을 하나 더 쏘았습니다. 이번에도 화살은 사자에게 맞았지만 다치게 하지는 못했습니다. 사자의 가죽은 아주 단단했습니다. 헤르쿨레스가 또 하나의 화살을 쏠 채비를 갖추었을 때, 사자가 그를 보았습니다. 사자는 꼬리를 휘두르며 껑충 뛰어 그에게 달려들었습니다. 헤르쿨레스는 몽둥이를 들어올려 사자의 머리를 내리쳤습니다. 몽둥이는 두 동강이 났습니다. 사자는 땅에 고꾸라졌지만 죽지는 않았습니다. 헤르쿨레스는 두 손으로 사자의 목을 잡고 죽여버렸습니다. 헤르쿨레스는 사자의 가죽을 벗겨 그의 어깨에 걸쳤습니다. 그런 다음 그는 왕에게로 돌아갔습니다. “저는 첫 번째 과제를 해냈습니다.” 그가 말했습니다. 그 후 헤르쿨레스는 항상 사자 가죽을 걸치고 다녔으며, 몽둥이를 또 하나 만들었습니다.
