George looked up at the clock. It was 6시 15분. The door from the street opened. A street-car motorman came in.

"Hello, George," he said. "Can I get 저녁(식사)?"

"Sam's gone out," George said. "He'll be back in about half an hour."

"I'd better go up the street," the motorman said. George looked at the clock. It was twenty minutes past six.

"That was nice, bright boy," Max said. "You're a regular little gentleman."

"He knew I'd blow his head off," Al said from the kitchen.
"No," said Max. "It ain't that. Bright boy is nice. He's a nice boy. I like him."

At six-fifty-five George said: "He's not coming."

Two other people had been in the lunch-room. Once George had gone out to the kitchen and made a ham-and-egg sandwich "포장용의, 가져갈" that a man wanted to take with him.

죠지가 시계를 쳐다보았다. 6시 15분이었다. 길 쪽에서 문이 열렸다. 전차 운전사가 들어왔다.

“안녕, 죠지.” 그가 말했다. “저녁 되니?”

“샘은 나갔어요.” 죠지가 말했다. “30분 안에 돌아올 거에요.”

“거리로 가는 게 낫겠네.” 운전수가 말했다. 죠지는 시계를 쳐다보았다. 6시 20분이었다.

“잘했어. 똑똑이.” 맥스는 말했다. “넌 완전 꼬마 신사야.”

“내가 자기 머리를 날려버릴 거란 걸 알아서 그래.” 알이 주방에서 말했다.
“아냐.” 맥스가 말했다. “그렇지 않아. 똑똑이는 멋져. 괜찮은 아이야, 맘에 들어.”

6시 55분에 죠지가 말했다. “그는 오지 않을 거에요.”
