He liked to look at them from the front porch as they walked 건너편에 of the street. He liked to watch them walking under the shade of the trees. He liked the round Dutch collars above their sweaters. He liked their silk stockings and flat shoes. He liked their 단발머리 and the way they walked.

When he was in town their appeal to him was not very strong. He did not like them when he saw them in the Greek's ice cream parlor. He did not want them themselves really. They were too complicated. There was something else. Vaguely he wanted a girl but he did not want to have to work to get her. He would have liked to have a girl but he did not want to have to 긴 시간을 들이다 getting her. He did not want to get into the intrigue and the politics. He did not want to have to do any courting. He did not want to tell any more lies. It wasn't worth it.

젊은 아가씨들이 길 건너편에서 걷고 있으면 크레브스는 앞 현관에서 그 모습을 보는 게 좋았다. 크레브스는 나무 그늘 아래로 걷는 아가씨들을 보는 게 좋았다. 아가씨들의 스웨터 위로 보이는 둥근 더치 칼라가 좋았다. 그녀들이 신은 실크 스타킹과 플랫 슈즈가 좋았다. 그녀들의 단발머리, 걷는 모습이 좋았다.
크레브스가 도시에 있던 때는 그토록 강렬한 매력을 느끼지는 못했었다. 그리스의 아이스크림 가게에서 본 아가씨들은 그렇게 매력적이지 않았다. 크레브스는 정말로 그 여자들에게 그다지 매력을 느끼지 못했다. 그때는 무엇인가 너무 복잡했다. 무언가 다른 것이 있었다. 그 중 한 여자에게 약간 끌리기는 했지만 그녀를 얻기 위해 애쓸 정도는 아니었다. 그녀와 교제하게 되었다면 좋았을 것이다. 하지만 크레브스는 그렇게 되기까지 긴 시간을 들이는 것은 내키지 않았다. 크레브스는 모의와 정치의 세계로 뛰어들 생각이 없었다. 굳이 힘을 들여 연애를 하고 싶지 않았다. 더 이상 거짓말을 하고 싶지도 않았다. 별로 그럴 만한 일도 아니었다.
